Looking at the skies yesterday morning, I could not have predicted the intense, heavy snowfall that blasted the area just a few hours later. The 24-hour snowfall from that storm ended up being well over 60 cm, and the base at Happo has now officially topped the 300 cm mark, reaching an impressive 350 cm! This morning, calm blue skies and a majestic sea of clouds almost made me forget about the raging storm that had brought so much snow such a short time ago.

I spoke with a regular at Happo (pictured), who said, “Yesterday, the snow that started just before noon and continued until about 2:00 p.m. was so heavy that it completely covered all the tracks and fully reset the slopes.” Indeed, around 50 to 60 cm of fresh snow greeted me on the smooth, untouched slope along the Kurobishi 3 Pair. I enjoyed the feeling of floating effortlessly on deep powder without bottoming out!

The groomed areas paralleling the Kurobishi Quad and in the center of the Skyline Course (pictured) had moderately firm packed powder surfaces that enabled me to set my edges and ski with speed. The amount of new snow in the ungroomed areas of Skyline was 25 to 30 cm, and some shallow tracks and uneven spots were noticeable. I found around 40 cm along the Alpen Quad and 10 to 15 cm on the steep slope of the Kitaone Course, both of which were marked by irregular moguls.

The Kitaone forest road course had a moderately soft, groomed powder snow surface, while the Sakka and Shirakaba slopes had relatively firm, groomed powder snow conditions. In other news, the “SMITH DEMO CARAVAN @ Hakuba Happo-One” event is set to take place at the Usagidaira Terrace on 2/4 (Sat.) and 2/5 (Sun.). (Starts at 9:30 a.m., free of charge, ID required.)
