Happo-one REPORT

2023.02.21290cm / Snowy

I started the day by checking images from meteorological satellites and could clearly see high, streaking clouds over the Sea of Japan caused by the current winter pressure pattern. In the morning, strong winds were blowing on the upper portion of Happo, and the Alpen Quad, Skyline 2 Pair, Kurobishi 2 Quad, and Grat Quad were closed as a result. I went to the bottom of the Alpen Quad to measure the amount of new snow and found between 30 to 35 cm.

The Panorama Course and the ungroomed section that goes from Panorama down to Central (pictured) had occasional gusty winds that picked up snow causing brief whiteouts. One snowboarder (pictured) I met commented, “It’s so windy. I think a lot of the snow has been blown away.” There was 5 to 20 cm of fresh snow on top of the moderately firm, undulating base.

It was tough conditions on the Central Course, where about 15 to 20 cm of fluffy, fresh snow sat atop the hard, medium to large-sized moguls. I enjoyed a run on the Olympic Course II (pictured), which sits at the same elevation but faces north and had 20 to 25 cm of dry, fresh snow on top of the well-packed surface bumps. The Sakka Wave was easy to ski, with 2 to 3 cm of fresh snow covering the well-groomed wet snow.

Even on the groomed, well-packed, wet snow surface of the Shirakaba Slope (pictured) there was a layer of 2 to 3 cm of dry, fresh snow. In other news, access to the Riesen Slalom Course will be restricted from 2/22 (Wed.) due to preparation for the 77th Happo-One Riesen Slalom Competition to be held on 2/23 (Thu., holiday) and 2/23 (Fri.). In addition, the course along the Shirakaba 2 Pair was also restricted due to course construction for the 2023 HAPPO BANKED SLALOM event taking place on 2/25 (Sat.).
