On 6/1 (Mon.), Mominoki Luxury Travel (located inside the Hakuba Mominoki Hotel) launched its Hakuba Helicopter Sightseeing tours. Guests can choose between a 15-minute flight featuring aerial views of the Hakuba Sanzan peaks and Mt. Karamatsu, or a 30-minute course that also takes in some of the Northern Alps’ most famous landmarks, including Mt. Tsurugi, Mt. Yari, the Hotaka Range, and Kurobe Dam. The helicopter lifts off from a heliport near Nire Pond, its rotors building to a thunderous roar before the aircraft gently rises into the air, and I couldn’t help but mutter, “Wow… this is incredible.” Less than ten minutes after takeoff, we were already flying above the Toyama side of Mt. Karamatsu (pictured). The saying “seeing is believing” could not have been more appropriate. I experienced the 15-minute course this time, and looking down on the Northern Alps from the sky was even more breathtaking than I had imagined.

The view wasn’t limited to the snow-covered ridgelines of the Northern Alps. Looking down over the lush green foothills of early summer and Hakuba Happo-one Ski Resort was equally impressive. With the Happo Alpen Line beginning daily operations from 6/6 (Sat.), it won’t be long before hikers and climbers can also be spotted making their way along the trekking routes below.

Before boarding, I was a little concerned about motion sickness, but the helicopter remained remarkably stable throughout the flight, so there was no problem at all. The aviation headset provided for each passenger also features noise cancellation, making it easy to hear both the pilot’s commentary and conversations during the flight. By the time we landed, I was already thinking that next time I’d like to come back and do it privately for a special occasion.
