Cortina REPORT

2024.01.08170cm / Snowy

A heavy snow advisory was issued at 6:12 p.m. yesterday for Hakuba, Otari, Kijimadaira, Nozawa Onsen, Shinano-machi, and more. This morning I spoke with a man from Aichi Prefecture (pictured) who told me he was a fan of Snownavi, and added, “We got dumped on. I’m getting a jump on clearing the snow from my car since I saw it announced on Facebook that the opening of the lifts would be delayed.” The snow that intensified last evening was still falling densely this morning, and a cold westerly wind was blowing.

The “powder festival” began as the 2nd Quad began moving at 9:00 a.m., nad cheers could be heard from the crowd waiting in the 300-meter-long line. The 4th pair also began operating at 9:00, so I headed there right away. While waiting for the 2nd Quad, I heard a lot of people commenting about how much snow had fallen, and how excited they were.
[Ikenota Slope]

I started to get really excited while riding the 4th Pair (pictured) and watching skiers and boarders surfing under the lift line and sending up sprays of snow. The amount of new snow on the groomed Hiedayama Course 1 even exceeded 70cm! A lot of people stalled or got stuck after losing momentum, and I saw one snowboarder who was almost neck deep in the snow say, “It’s too deep! I’m really stuck, but the powder is so much fun!”
[4th Pair Lift]

I needed another hit of powder, and took the 4th Pair up again, this time heading to the Itadiara Course (pictured), where I was rewarded with over 60 cm of fluffy, fresh powder. The Ikenota, Ikenota Forrest, and Ipponmatsu courses had soft, groomed powder surfaces plus a 15 to 20cm topping of light fresh snow, bringing plenty of joy to the last day of the three-day weekend.
