Cortina REPORT

2024.01.14200cm / Sunny

Thanks to the snow that began falling during the day yesterday and continued coming down hard until around 9:00 p.m., the officially announced base depth is now up to 200 cm! This morning I ran into Tsukiji-san of Island Joy (pictured, left) and monoski adviser Zama-san (pictured, right), who told me, “Conditions are amazing today, and I’m sure Cortina’s famous tree runs will be very enjoyable.” Because of the clear skies, the temperature had dropped all the way down to -14 degrees Celsius this morning.
[Ipponmatsu Course]

The Ipponmatsu Course (first photo), Ikenota Slope, and Hiedayama Forest Course (pictured) were all groomed with reasonably firm powder snow surfaces. Mr. Sato of Monster Cliff was with me at the 4th Pair and as we were talking he said, “Today’s THE DAY. This morning, I was the first one to line up at the 2nd Quad boarding area at 5:50 a.m. The line under the 4th Pair looks good, but for some reason, I always end up going to Hiedayama Course 2.”
[Hiedayama Rinkan Course]

Almost everyone in the lead group off of the 4th Pair Lift headed to Hiedayama 2 and 3. I skied through the tunnel of rime ice-caked trees on the Hiedayama Forest Course before dropping into the ungroomed Hiedayama Course 1. The tracks and surface bumps from the previous day were still slightly visible on the snow surface, but with the 60 cm+ layer of new snow, I was able to have fun floating on the fresh pow without bottoming out.

As is typical of a Cortina “powder festival”, there were plenty of shouts and cheers rising up from the tree area and from below the 4th Lift line. Itadaira was also ungroomed, and had the same fluffy powder conditions as Hiedayama 1. The Ikenota Slope and Ipponmatsu Course had groomed powder snow surfaces and were powder snow, and were crowded with mainly families.
