This morning, small, hail-like pellets of snow were falling at the foot of the mountain, most likely due to the cold front extending down to the main island of Honshu from a low-pressure system near Hokkaido. Up at Usagidaira, the air felt colder than the temperature suggested, and fine snow was coming down hard as the wind was blowing lightly from the southwest. It was another typical January weekday, with a slow visitor turnout in the morning.

The Riesen Slalom Course (pictured) had 1 to 2 cm of fresh snow, and the groomed powder snow surface was farm on the top half of the run, while the groomed surface of the Usuba Slope at the end of the course featured firm wet snow. My edges held the surface well, and I was able to ride at a good speed from top to bottom.

There was 2 to 3 cm of fresh snow on the souther route of Usagidaira (pictured), which was groomed with a well-packed powder snow surface. Snow conditions ont he slope were great, but the flat light made it difficult to see the snow surface. Likewise, there was 2 to 3cm of new covering the hard-packed moguls in the ungroomed area along the Alpen Quad.

The ungroomed Riesen Grat, which has been skiable since yesterday, had about 3 cm of fresh snow on top of shallow tracks on the steep slope towards the end. The groomed Panorama Course (pictured) had a firm powder snow surface. The forecast is calling for a winter weather system to move into the area through tomorrow, which should result in significant snowfall.
