Happo-one REPORT

2024.01.13190cm / Snowy

As predicted, and as hoped for, the storm brought significant accumulation! When I arrived at Usagidaira, I was struck by the thick snow clouds that made the area feel dimly lit, and the intensity of the falling dry snow. And I was even more excited when a member of the ski patrol told me, “It’s a good one today!” Without hesitation, I headed for Sodeguro (pictured), the steep ungroomed slope on the north side of Usagidaira.

The 45 to 50 cm of fluffy new snow on Sodeguro (pictured) was perfect powder, with just the right amount and consistency: not too light, and not too heavy. There were some bumps and uneven areas across the underlying base, but once I started skiing, I thoroughly enjoyed the sensation of floating on fresh powder!

Visitors were stoked, and I could hear cheers and shouts coming from all over the place. The southern route of Usagidaira had a moderately firm, groomed powder snow surface topped with 10 cm of fresh snow that made it even more pleasant. However, I had to be careful because the thick fog made it difficult to see the snow surface, and particularly, the border between the groomed and ungroomed areas.

Similarly, there was about 10 cm of new snow on the Panorama Course (pictured), which was also groomed with moderately firm powder snow. Later, I skied down to the Olympic Course II, where I finally emerged from the clouds and the visibility opened up. There was 25 to 30 cm of fresh snow on Olympic II, with hard packed small to medium sized moguls. (*The fresh snow at the end of the course was a bit heavy.)
