Happo-one REPORT

2024.01.26240cm / Partly Cloudy

This morning I spoke with a Happo regular who told updated me on conditions, saying, “Yesterday the lifts on the upper portion of the resort started moving around 11:30, and just an hour later the Skyline 2 Pair was suspended, and thirty minutes after that the Alpen Quad was shut down. I was worried last night because the wind was strong even at the base of the mountain, but I’m glad it appears to have stopped.” People were gathering one after another in line for the Alpen Quad, which was surrounded by untouched slopes.

I had a hard time deciding between Usagidaira, Kurobishi, and Omusubi, and settled on Sodeguro (pictured) for my first tracks. The slope was completely smooth with wind-packed fresh snow, of which there was about 30 cm. I enjoyed the fluffy feeling of the snow while paying attention to my skis’ center of gravity and edges so as not to get bogged down in the deep stuff.

The southern route of Usagidaira Slope had a firm, groomed powder snow surface, while the bases of the Panorama Course, Panorama Forest Cat Track, Sakka Wave, and Sakka Slope (pictured) were all moderately, groomed powder snow. I was growing more and more excited as I skied further and further down the seemingly endless powder slopes.

As I went back up, I spoke with a skier coming down Omusubi (pictured) that told me, “There was 50 to 60 cm of fresh snow, and it was soft and great! I’m off for another helping.” In other news, the ungroomed Olympic Course II was covered with medium to large-sized moguls that were firmly packed.
