Happo-one REPORT

2024.01.27240cm / Mostly Sunny

Because of the large amount and excellent quality of the snow that fell this week between 1/23 (Tue.) and 1/26 (Fri.), it was obvious that the groomed slopes would be in pristine condition this weekend. And it was also obvious that plenty of people were coming to take advantage of the excellent conditions, as the volume of cars approaching the HAKUBA VALLEY from Azumino to the south and Nagano to the east was definitely more than usual. As I stepped off the gondola, the sun was shining and dry snow was falling along with a light breeze.

I expected conditions on the groomed Panorama Course (pictured) to be good, but they were even better than I had hoped for and it was hard to contain my excitement. My edges held firm and my skis slid smoothly across the groomed, well-packed powder snow base, making me feel as if I had suddenly become a much better skier!

A strong westerly wind was blowing at the top of the resort, sending up rolling vortexes of snow around the Shakujii Cairn (pictured, background). The first half of Riesen Grat (pictured) was groomed with a moderately firm powder snow surface topped with around 1 cm of new, dry snow. The ungroomed second half of Riesen Grat had reasonably packed surface tracks and moguls.

The southern route of Usagidaira had a well-packed, groomed powder snow base, while the area along the Kurobishi Quad, the Skyline Course, and HAPPO PARKS (pictured) had moderately firm, groomed powder snow. Each offered comfortable conditions for skiing. In other news, the 2024 ID one ski Mid-Season Test-Ride event (*Starts at 9:00 a.m., same-day registration ¥1,500) is being held today and tomorrow on the slopes of Nakiyama. A staff member I spoke with said, “We have about 20 models on hand, including both 2023-24 and 2024-25 models. We hope you take advantage of this opportunity!”
