Cortina REPORT

2024.02.18188cm / Partly Cloudy

This morning, wind was blowing lighty from the southwest, and the early morning cloud cover began to give way to blue skies and sunshine around 9:00 a.m. Early on I spoke with a couple of students from Osaka (pictured), who told me, “We just arrived this morning on a bus tour with Orion Tour. Our other four friends are still waiting in line for rentals. We’re all looking forward to the food and sauna.” I found the groomed Ipponmatsu Course (pictured) easy to ski, with a slightly loose granular snow surface that my skis ran well across.

Today was Ski Kodomo no Hi, or Kids Day, where children were eligible for half price one-day lift tickets. The Ikenota Slope (pictured) was groomed with loose granular snow that made it easy to dig my edges deep into the slope surface. I had a chat with a father from Tokyo who was out on a 1-night, 2-day trip, who commented, “I came out to Cortina with my kids (pictured) for the first time. The hotel and the slopes are conveniently located right next to each other.”

Next I spoke with a group of three people from Osaka (pictured). They told me they were fans of Snownavi, and continued, “We entered the backcountry yesterday from Hakunori.” The ungroomed Hiedayama Course 1 (pictured) had soft, small moguls that made it easy to navigatge. The groomed Hiedayama Forest Course had a loose wet snow surface at the beginning and middle of the course, and loose granular snow at the end.

A father (pictured, left), also from Osaka, told me that he gave his kids the day off of school on Monday so that they could come skiing for three days. He said that they ski at Cortina once a year and stay at the Hotel Green Plaza Hakuba. With a lot of visitors and direct sunlight, the Ikenota Slope was already turning to slush around 10:00 a.m. The groomed Itadaira Course had a loose, wet snow surface, and was a popular choice right from the the start of the day.
