On 4/27 (Sun.), the resort opening was delayed to 8:15 a.m. due to a mechanical issue with the gondola. After things did finally get going, I spoke with members of the Kyoto Institute of Technology’s White Locus Ski Club (pictured) who told me, “We always follow your reports! We’re here to celebrate and welcome five new student members to our club. The 2nd and 3rd year students want to practice moguls, but with the Alpen Quad currently on hold, we haven’t been able to do so yet. For many of us, this might end up being the last day of the season.”

The Alpen Quad, Usagidaira Pair, and Kurobishi Quad, which had been on hold due to strong winds, resumed operation around 10:00 a.m., t. The run beside the Kurobishi Quad (pictured), as well as the Panorama Course and the southern route of Usagidaira were groomed with soft granular snow that made for classic spring-like conditions perfect for carving smooth, satisfying turns.

The Kids’ Park beside the Usagidaira Terrace (pictured, open from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.) also featured a soft, groomed granular snow surface. The park operation is limited, with the next opening coming on 4/29 (Tue., holiday), followed by 5/3 (Sat., holiday) to 5/5 (Mon., holiday). All available gear—including plastic sleds, disc sleds, ZIPFYs (pictured), and snow striders—can be used free of charge.

I met up with a group of visitors from Tokyo, Kanagawa, and Hakuba Village (pictured) who commented, “We always check your updates! We’ve been hoping to meet a Snownavi reporter in person, so it’s nice to finally do so today. Our first run on Usagidaira was nice and smooth—it felt great. Now we’re off to enjoy the moguls on the ungroomed slopes.” Unfortunately, strong winds persisted on the Riesen Grat, keeping the Grat Quad out of operation. In the end, the resort announced a full-day closure at 12:40 p.m.
