It was a warm start to the day with a spring-like overcast sky, and I found myself taking off my mid-layer before hitting the slopes. This morning, the groomed runs on the Usagidaira Slope (pictured) and along the Kurobishi Quad offered moderately soft corn snow conditions. My edges held well, and I was able to confidently pick up speed.

Meanwhile, on the Panorama Course (pictured), there was a thick layer of soft surfac snow right from the start. However, the entire slope had been groomed with a smooth, flat finish that allowed me to control my turns with ease. There was a small patch of exposed ground toward the end of the run along the Kokusai 3 Pair, but it was minor and didn’t affect the skiing experience.

Within about an hour, the groomed run on Usagidaira (pictured) turned slushy, and by around 9:30 a.m., tracks and ruts had already started to form. For me as a reporter eager to hit the moguls, these early bumps provided the perfect warm-up.

The ungroomed areas along the Kurobishi 3 Pair (pictured), Alpen Quad, and Riesen Grat had started to show some surface discoloration, but with only minimal fallen leaves or branches and no exposed ground, conditions remained safe for skiing. Kurobishi was especially enjoyable thanks to the varied steepness and irregular mogul spacing.
