I ran into a staff member hurriedly getting things ready, who told me, “I’m glad the heavy snow finally started last night! We’ll announce whether we can open tomorrow, along with all the pertinent details, this afternoon, so please check our official website or social media accounts (Facebook, Instagram).” Just like last season, Cortina has been blessed with steady cold temperatures and timely snowfall leading right up to the planned opening day.

The rain that soaked the base area yesterday afternoon turned to snow as the pressure pattern shifted to a classic west-high, east-low setup, and by this morning, dry snow was falling in earnest. Following the fresh grooming on the Ikenota Slope (pictured), which is all but certain to open, a few bushes were still visible across the mid to upper sections.

Around 20 cm of deep, fluffy new snow had piled up in the base area, 30 to 40 cm across the mid section of Ikenota, and 25 to 30 cm on the Ipponmatsu Course (pictured). The surface of the Ipponmatsu Course had been hammered by a northerly wind and had developed a light crust as a result. Meanwhile, the access road from National Route 148 to Hakuba Cortina had been plowed, but slushy snow remained, making it slippery.

Around 9:30 a.m. (pictured, third photo), the sun broke through briefly before the sky above was once again swallowed by clouds. According to the forecast, snow is expected to continue falling through tonight. With a bit more accumulation, I’m hoping that when the lifts open tomorrow, it won’t be just the Ikenota Slope, but also the courses along the 4th Pair and the Ipponmatsu Course that will be skiable.
