Ninja Snow Highland celebrated its pre-opening on 12/13 (Sat.), eight days earlier than last season! I met a skier visiting from Kanagawa (pictured), who told me, “I always check your reports. Ninja is great because it’s never crowded, so I decided to come out for the opening today.” At 8:30 a.m., the NINJA Lift (556 m) began operating, giving access to the Blackbeat Slope (pictured).

Blackbeat had a firmly packed, pressed surface made up of a combination of natural and man-made snow that formed a fast, ski-friendly surface that let my skis run smoothly. There were a few exposed bushes on the skier’s left side around the point where the pitch begins to steepen mid-slope. Thanks to the long stretches of shade on this course, the surface showed no signs of softening during the time of my reporting.

During today’s and tomorrow’s pre-opening, one-day lift tickets are discounted ¥1,000 from the regular price as follows: adults ¥3,500, high school, university, and vocational students ¥2,500, ages 60 to 69 ¥2,800, ages 70 and over ¥2,000, and children ages 4 through third year of junior high school ¥1,000. With calm, clear skies, the ride up the NINJA Lift offered relaxed views of nearby frost-covered trees and the Northern Alps.

By the way, a new “Mori Cafe” will open this season on the second floor of the facility tucked away to the back left of the NINJA Lift base (opening 12/25; pricing TBD). Part of the floor features reservation-only tents (pictured), where you can lie down and relax, and for a limited time, they will be free to use through 1/7. “Restaurant Mine” also started operating today, though with a limited menu.
