With the January three-day holiday weekend just ahead, Tsugaike Mountain Resort is in great shape thanks to yesterday’s solid snowfall. The Han-no-ki Slope (pictured) was groomed from top to bottom, with moderately firm, powdery conditions. It skied so smoothly that the roughly 3 km run felt surprisingly short.

I ran into a woman from Otari Village (pictured), who told me, “I always follow Snownavi! Work’s been busy and I haven’t been able to ski this season until now—today is my first day on the slopes.” With winter arriving later than usual this year, today marks an ideal starting point if you want to ski the whole mountain and/or use brand-new skis. The Maruyama and Shirakaba Slopes were also groomed with moderately firm, easy-to-ski powder conditions.

The ultra-wide Kane-no-naru-oka Slope (pictured), which has often been left ungroomed this season, was also freshly groomed. The snow was moderately soft and very easy to ski, allowing for both long, sweeping turns and quick, short-radius turns. It was great to see an instructor from the Tsugaike Ski School (pictured, right) patiently teaching an international family.

I spoke with four riders from Yamanashi, Niigata, Omachi City, and Matsukawa Village (pictured) who told me, “We always check Snownavi! The snow is great, the weather’s cleared up, and it feels amazing today. The two of us (pictured, right side) are sneaking in some powder before heading to our night shift.” In the ungroomed area around the midsection of Han-no-ki, 20 to 25 cm of soft, fluffy new snow had accumulated.
