Togakushi Ski Resort is famous for the kind of steep terrain that advanced skiers dream about. Although it’s been a low-snow season nationwide, three of the four steep runs lining the No. 3 Quad (995 m) are open. On the Champion Course (pictured), the steepest slope at Togakushi with a maximum pitch of 31 degrees and an average of 28 degrees, I headed decisively down the fall line and skied fast while keeping my fear in check.

With what’s being called the longest and strongest cold wave of the season moving in, intense cold filled the mountain air, and dry snow fell at times, carried by strong gusts of wind. I linked the No. 3 Quad (pictured) and the No. 6 Quad (1,135 m) to reach the top of the ski area visible in the back left of the photo. From the Osen-sui Course, which offered well-set groomed moist snow with a dry, powdery feel, I enjoyed a long run of about 3 km top to bottom.

I ran into two visitors from Tokyo (pictured) who told me, “We applied for the season pass giveaway on the official Instagram and actually won! Edges really bite today, and carving feels great.” It was pretty random luck to run into the single winner of the giveaway campaign out on the slopes.

The Champion Course, Panorama Course, and Shirakaba Course (pictured) all featured well-set groomed wet snow. With the surfaces firmly packed, I was able to engage my edges confidently and build speed smoothly. After wrapping up my reporting, I warmed up and refueled with Yanagiran’s signature piping-hot baked curry.
