2026.01.22262 cm / Snowy

This morning, I ran into a skier from Otari Village told who me, “This is the day I’ve been looking forward to most all season. I’m heading up to DBD this morning to get my fill of powder.” Checking the live cameras showed that snowfall was especially heavy from around midnight through the early morning hours. On the Shirakaba Slope, grooming work by the snowcats continued right up until just before operations began (pictured).

So today, despite differences in the amount of new snow in the groomed and ungroomed areas, the entire mountain had turned into a powder paradise. On the Han-no-ki Slope, the moderately firm, powder-groomed surface picked up about 2 cm of light new snow near the top, 10 to 15 cm through the midsection, and a massive 30 to 40 cm in the ungroomed steep section mid-mountain. Huge plumes of snow and excited cheers were rising in the air one after another.

The lower section of the Han-no-ki Slope and the Shirakaba Slope both featured 10 to 15 cm of light new snow on top of moist groomed surface that felt powdery. On the Champion Slope (pictured), the same powder-feel groomed surface picked up 20 to 30 cm of light new snow from the top through the midsection, with around 15 cm near the bottom. In areas frequented by beginner skiers, the fresh snow had already been worked into the base early on, transitioning into a nicely set, powdery surface that was easy and confidence-inspiring to ski.

My target for the day was the ungroomed area beneath the Champion Quad, where there was 30 to 40 cm of soft, fluffy new snow. When I slowed down, I could feel the firm base underneath, but the overall float was fantastic. Spirits were high all around, including my own, and plenty of riders waved and called out to me from the lift as they passed overhead.
