The season’s strongest and longest cold wave, which arrived on 1/20 (Tue.), has finally eased off. With snow removal taking longer than expected and the Tsuga No. 2 Pair starting late, I rode the first gondola of the morning and headed over to the Han-no-ki Slope (pictured). Under calm, overcast skies, I set off with a spring in my step, surrounded by deep new snow and enjoying the soft, unmistakable feel of powder underfoot.

A father from Chiba Prefecture (pictured) told me, “I always follow Snownavi. I still use a photo you took two years ago at Tsuga-no-mori, when I was holding my youngest—who was less than one at the time—as my phone’s lock screen.” He continued, “This kid loves powder, so yesterday was incredible. There was so much snow that he got buried a few times, and I had to rescue him more than once. Today’s fresh snow feels great too!”

The Maruyama Slope and the Kane-no-naru-oka Slope (pictured) were also groomed into nicely soft, powdery conditions. With excellent powder all the way to the bottom, the ultra-wide Kane-no-naru-oka was especially fun from a reporter’s point of view this morning. In addition, around 20 cm of light new snow had accumulated on the steep, ungroomed section in the mid-Han-no-ki area.

A staff member at the Kids’ Area (pictured) told me, “The snowfall from the past couple of days has finally settled down, so we’re clearing snow from the snow escalator. I got so absorbed in shoveling that I’m sweating like crazy.” Despite it being a weekday, visitors arrived early, and as of 9 a.m., the west side of the parking lot was already full, with the east side about 80% occupied.
