It was a perfect bluebird day with no wind—ideal conditions for skiing. This morning, the Riesen Slalom Course (pictured) was groomed, with a moderately firm wet snow base that had a powdery feel. The beauty of the rime ice covering the trees, which extended as far as the Central Course and Usuba Slope, added to the atmosphere as I carved fresh tracks into the pristine morning corduroy.

The Alpen Quad began operating at 8:20 a.m., ten minutes ahead of schedule, for backcountry climbers. Just like Riesen, Usagidaira’s South Side Route (pictured) and the slope along the Kurobishi Quad had groomed, moderately firm wet snow that felt like powder. The central section of the Skyline Course was well-groomed and had firmly set wet snow.

February bluebird days really are special and never too cold, thanks to the spring-like sunshine that feels just right. Many people, including instructors from the Hakuba Happo-one Ski School (pictured), called out to me or waved from the lifts while I was reporting. The ski school will hold a special two-day program on 2/21 (Sat.) & 2/22 (Sun.) for those “one step away from passing Level 2.”

HAPPO PARKS (pictured), with its moderately firm, groomed wet snow base, underwent major reshaping work from 2/18 (Wed.) to 2/20 (Fri.), and the “MUGEN LINE” is set to take place there from 10 a.m. on 2/21 (Sat.). The Kitaone Forest Road was well-groomed with a firmly set wet snow surface, while the Sakka Slope was groomed as well, but only moderately firm.
