The 56th Annual Hakuba Happo-One Fire Festival is set to take place the day after tomorrow, 2/20 (Fri.), around the Nakiyama Slope! The event will feature a torchlight ski run, a fire-lighting ceremony, stage performances, demonstration runs, and a fireworks finale. Today, on this second straight day of sunshine, a light easterly wind—barely noticeable at the base—was gently blowing across the upper slopes.

Radiational cooling brought a decent chill early this morning, but with plenty of sunshine it grew comfortable quickly. The Sakka Slope (pictured), Sakka Wave, and Shirakaba Slope were groomed with firmly set granular snow bases, but by around 9:00 a.m., surface of the sun-exposed areas began to soften slightly.

The Riesen Slalom Course (pictured) was groomed with a firm, wet snow surface up top, transitioning to even firmer granular snow toward the bottom. As a result, it was possible to carry smooth, consistent speed all the way down to the base. In related news, the legendary grassroots race, the 80th Riesen Slalom Competition, will be held here on 2/26 (Thu.) & 2/27 (Fri.). (The 80th edition! An impressive milestone.)

Usagidaira’s South Side Route and the area along the Kurobishi Quad (pictured) were both groomed with moderately firm wet snow that retained a powdery feel. With those conditions, I was able to set my edges confidently and link turns just as I intended. In the ungroomed areas along the Alpen Quad and the Kurobishi 3 Pair (pictured, background), firm medium- to large-sized moguls had formed. The central section of the Skyline Course was groomed with a firm wet snow surface.
