From 11:00 a.m. on 3/1 (Sun.), the second installment of a corporate tie-up event, “Tonjiru & Rice Koji Milk,” was held at Kitaone Kogen. The available free samples included 200 servings of rice koji milk and 300 cups of tonjiru (pork miso soup), both products from Marukome Co., Ltd., the Nagano-based leader in the miso industry. Visitors could choose hot or iced rice koji milk, while the tonjiru was served in sealed cups that participants opened themselves.

The instant tonjiru sold in supermarkets (pictured, left) uses Shinshu-style red strained miso. Rice koji milk (pictured, right), a plant-based milk developed in Japan, contains about 60% of the sugar found in traditional koji amazake. It had a gentle sweetness and a mild, comforting flavor.

The real charm was enjoying these items inside the kotatsu café (pictured)—outdoors, yet cozy, which somehow made everything taste even better. Many guests also picked up drinks or soft-serve ice cream made with Matsuda Milk (¥550) from the Kitaone Kogen Terrace, and enjoyed them while taking a relaxing break. The event will be held again on 3/7 (Sat.) and 3/8 (Sun.) from 11:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

I spoke with a couple from Osaka Prefecture (pictured) who told me, “We always read your reports! We came up on Friday just for this ‘big event.’ We even joined a Marukome miso-making workshop last summer. The rice koji milk tastes a bit like soy milk, but with a distinct rice aroma.” At HAPPO PARKS, a family from Hyogo Prefecture commented, “This is our final ski trip of the season.”
