Intense sunshine shone right from the start of the morning, and it already felt warm before the lifts started running. I spoke with two visitors from Toyama Prefecture (pictured), who told me, “This year we’ve been taking our kids to ski resorts outside Toyama quite a bit. We come to Cortina every season, but today is our first visit this winter. I wish we could’ve gotten more powder laps in…”

The Mt. Hieda Forest Course was groomed into moderately firm corn snow, but the lower half remained partially closed—from the junction with Mt. Hieda Course 1 onward—due to avalanche risk. Facing directly into the sun, the surface of the Itadaira Course (pictured) had already loosened into soft, granular corn snow from the start. My edges sunk in deeply, but the skis still ran well, allowing me to link turns just as I wanted.

The Ikenota Slope hadn’t softened quite as much as Itadaira, but the groomed surface had already transitioned to loosened corn snow early on. Around 8:30 a.m., the slopes were still fairly quiet (pictured), but by 9:00 a.m., students likely on spring break and international visitors began to fill in, creating a livelier midweek atmosphere than usual.

I also met a father from Aichi Prefecture, who told me, “We love Cortina and stay at Hotel Green Plaza Hakuba every year with our kids (pictured). This time we’ve been here for three nights starting 2/28 (Sat.). …Oh, one second, I’ve got a call. My wife—who’s taking care of our youngest in a room overlooking the Kids’ Park—asked me to tell you, ‘We always read your reports!’ haha.” By the way, did you notice the sled tracks and footprints in this photo…?
