Iwatake REPORT

2026.03.07180 cm / Snowy

Dense fog blanketed the Mountain Side early this morning, leaving everything obscured in a whiteout. Meanwhile, the East Slope (pictured) had 3 to 5 cm of slightly moist new snow on top of firm, groomed granular snow. I could hear beginners calling out, “I can’t see anything!” while advanced skiers drove their edges hard into the firm surface, carving aggressively and sending up snow spray in their wake.

Just as I was wondering how I would manage to take photos in these conditions, Frieren the Great Mage (pictured) appeared from the fog. “I cast a spell yesterday to make it snow,” she told me. “I’ll cast another one so it keeps snowing all day—and I’ll clear this fog as well.” Sure enough, thanks to her magic, the fog lifted soon afterward.

The South Slope had patchy accumulations of slightly moist new snow ranging from 0 to 5 cm on top of a hard, well-set groomed granular base. I met three visitors from Kanagawa (pictured) who told me, “We always read your reports. There’s more snow on View D than on the South Slope. Both carving and powder runs are fun today!” VIEW C and VIEW D had about 5 cm of soft new snow on top of firm groomed granular snow.

Today and tomorrow “GJ16.5,” an event organized by the JIBA Ita-Ita Association of Japan, is taking place, and the slopes were full of cosplayers. An event staff member told me, “Nearly 100 participants have gathered, and the atmosphere is great. Everyone who reads Snownavi should come join—it’s a really fun event!” As expected from Frieren, a master of many magical arts, she also cast a spell on the trees, coating them in rime ice.
