At 6:55 this morning in Hakuba, the thermometer in my hand showed a brisk -14℃. Soon after, the ridges of the Ushiro-Tateyama Mountain Range (Mt. Goryu pictured) began to turn red, the extremely cold northerly winds died down, and the whole scene felt indescribably cozy. After this, on my way to the ski resort, I passed the Hakuba Ohashi Bridge, where many people were setting up their cameras to capture the beautiful moment.

The upper portion of the mountain was a world cloaked in the beauty of frost and powder snow. I spoke with a skier (pictured) who greeted me, saying, “Good morning, I love your site!” I watched as they headed down the groomed Riesen Slalom Course drawing beautiful tracks on the moderately firm powder snow surface. The view of the village and foothills below, stained white by yesterday’s heavy snowfall, was also worth seeing.

As I expected, the steep ungroomed areas of Usagidaira, Kurobishi and Riesen Grat had been completely reset with untouched powder snow. The Sodeguro area on the north side of the Alpen Quad had 40 to 50 cm of fluffy snow whose surface had been slightly packed by the wind. As I watched skiers and boarders drop in on after another, sending up rooster tails of snow and shouts of joy, I randomly ran into the owner of Kuni’s Country Kitchen (pictured), a delicious western-style restaurant in Omachi City.

The Panorama Course had a flatly-groomed, moderately firm powder snow surface that was as enjoyable to ski as the fresh snow. Small moguls had formed on the steep area on the first half of the Olympic Course II, and the soft snow made for great skiing conditions.
