Before the lifts opened, a member of the patrol team (pictured) told me, “The snow was firm early this morning, but it’s already starting to soften. The lower section on the south side of the Panorama Course has been closed due to snowmelt.” About one month remains in the season, and the skiable area is now limited to four slopes: Kurobishi, Usagidaira, Skyline, and Panorama.

The south-facing route of Usagidaira (pictured) had groomed granular snow that was already soft from the start, with a light, loose feel across the surface. The mogul slope along the Alpen Quad was also soft early on, making for approachable granular conditions. Under calm, sunny skies, the strong sun made it feel quite warm.

Along the north-facing run by the Kurobishi Quad (pictured), the soft granular snow felt more set up than at Usagidaira. On the ungroomed slope along the Kurobishi 3 Pair, medium- to large-sized moguls were in place, with multiple lines not only on the steep pitch but also on the gentler sections. The exposed ground seen yesterday on the east side of the Kurobishi Quad had been covered with snow.

The free “Snow Play Area” on the south side of the Usagidaira Terrace (pictured) was neatly groomed, just like the ski runs. Plastic sleds, disc sleds, snow striders, and ZIPFY sleds are available for use at no charge. The area is scheduled to be open daily from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. until the snow is gone or the season ends.
