On 4/5 (Sun.), the annual “Hakuba Happo-One Spring Festival” was held at OAKLEY TERRACE (※free admission). Music from DJ Station Master (the JR Hakuba Station master) and DJ BACK4 filled the venue as participants picked up complimentary soft drinks (pictured), received raffle tickets, and began gathering in front of the stage.

At 11:00 a.m., a talk show began featuring Akito Watabe (pictured, third from left), Yoshito Watabe (fourth), and Aiko Uemura (second). The discussion covered Akito Watabe’s mindset during what became the final season of his career, exchanges between the brothers during Olympic competition, and even specially made ski jumping suits. Toward the end, Hakuba Village Mayor Mr. Maruyama presented Akito Watabe with a bouquet.

During the raffle, which featured 51 prizes with a total value of approximately ¥750,000, Aiko Uemura—one of the three Olympians drawing tickets—kept pulling numbers in the 300s, drawing laughs from the crowd (and resulting in many winners from that range). The final prize was a signed bib from Akito Watabe. A man from Toyama (pictured, far right), who won it, told me, “I’ve been coming to Happo for many years, but this is my first time winning. I’m overwhelmed!”

The groomed runs on Usagidaira’s south-facing route (pictured), the area along the Kurobishi Quad, and the Skyline Course had soft, loose granular snow. As the day went on, heavy traffic left plenty of tracks, and the surface took on a more broken-up, loose feel. At Kurobishi, there were exposed patches of dirt early on the skier’s right side, and on Skyline there were exposed areas on the skier’s left in the midsection and near the bottom (all marked with poles).
