Beginning on 4/20 (Mon.), the open terrain at Nozawa Onsen includes Yamabiko A to E, Kokenashi A and B, and Uenotaira (the Family Lane closes on 4/21). This morning, I spoke with a couple from Suzaka City (pictured) who told me, “We’ve seen the Snownavi site before. Today is my girlfriend’s first time skiing at Nozawa Onsen.” On the lower section of the Uenotaira Slope, where the snow had thinned out, snow had been pushed and piled from elsewhere in order to maintain coverage on the soft, groomed granular snow surface.

First thing this morning, the upper to mid sections of the Yamabiko C (pictured) and D Course had firm, groomed granular surfaces. By contrast, the lower section of C had already started to soften. From there, I moved over to the Yamabiko A Course, where the surface started out firm up top but gradually transitioned into a deeper, soft surface layer as I skied lower down.

Meanwhile, the mid- to large-sized moguls at the top of the Yamabiko B Course were soft and forgiving, making them approachable. The mid to lower sections (pictured) of the run were covered in soft, groomed granular snow. In addition, a hike-up park with boxes and rails has been open on the left side of the lower portion of the course since 4/21 (Tue.).

Later in the morning, I spoke with a group of three from Yamanashi Prefecture (pictured), who said, “We always read your reports! We heard there was still snow in Nozawa, so our group that usually skis together at Kamui Misaka came out.” Looking ahead, the “Spo GOMI in Nozawa Onsen” event, a competition that combines trash picking with sport, will be held on 4/26 (Sun.). The top teams will receive one-day lift tickets for this season along with additional prizes.
