It was a cold early morning due to overnight radiative cooling, but with no wind and direct sunshine, it actually didn’t feel that bad. I spoke with a family from Osaka (pictured), who told me, “We love your site! Yesterday we skied at Hakunori and stayed overnight at the Hotel Green Plaza Hakuba. The buffet dinner was delicious, and we ended up eating too much. We’re hoping to burn a lot of calories by skiing today.”

The groomed Ikenota Slope (pictured) and Ipponmatsu Course had excellent, moderately firm powder snow conditions, and I was able to set my edges and my controlled turns at speed. Visitors turned out to the Ikenota Slope early, and things were already getting busy by 9:00, but the snow surface remained in good condition.

The mogul lane (pictured) built on the skiers’ left side of the end of the Ipponmatsu Course, featured medium-sized moguls. The moguls were hard packed when the instructors from the Cortina Ski School were working on them first thing in the morning, but they had softened up around 9:30 a.m., making them slightly easier to tackle.

The Hiedayama Rinkan Course (pictured) and Itadaira Course featured moderately soft, groomed powder snow surfaces. The surface of the ungroomed Hiedayama Course 1 was uneven with shallow and irregular bumps and undulations, but thankfully wasn’t hard. I noticed groups and skiers moving slowly on Hiedayama Rinkan, whole those on Itadaira were skiing faster and carving aggressively.
