Cortina REPORT

2023.02.09270cm / Snow Clouds

I spoke with a member of the resort staff this morning, who told me, “Even though it’s been snowing continuously since yesterday afternoon, I wasn’t expecting a whole lot, but there’s a lot more new snow this morning than I imagined.” Heavy snow was falling and being blown around by a strong north wind, and I started to get very excited as I looked down upon the silky smooth slopes of the self-responsibility area (pictured) under the No. 4 Pair Lift line.

Going from the Hiedayama Rinkan Course, where there was around 2 cm of fresh snow topping off the moderately firm, groomed powder snow surface, I was stoked to discover around 25 to 30 cm of new snow as I entered the Hiedayama Course 1 (pictured)! I did bottom out from time to time on the soft, uneven base below, but I enjoyed every second of floating on fresh powder. It was the first real powder day since 2/2 (Thurs.), and I overheard a number of people vocalizing their excitement at they dropped in.

By 9:30 a.m., the intensity of the falling snow had died down. The widely-groomed Ikenota Slope (pictured, center) had a moderately firm, powder snow surface with about 1 cm of fresh snow on top. The start of the No. 3 Quad was delayed until 9:40 due to a late course check, and I was able to snag a spot on the first chair as it started operation, heading towards the Kamoshika Course (pictured, foreground).

The Rabbit Course, which had been affected by the wind, was groomed with a well-packed powder snow surface covered in between 1 and 10 cm of fluffy new snow depending on the spot. On the Kamoshika Course, I found exactly what I was looking for: 20 to 25 cm of fresh snow! The new snow combined with the firm, relatively even underlying base combined for an excellent powder run that I fully enjoyed!
