Cortina REPORT

2023.02.26280cm / Snowy

Today, despite the dense snow and occasionally strong gusts of wind from the north, there were also intermittent moments of light sunshine. Cortina’s official Facebook page posted that there was between 20 and 25 cm of new snow on the summit this morning, so this Sunday was lining up to be another “Powder Festival.” Sure enough, a long line formed early for the No. 2 Quad.

I met up with Akita-san (pictured), who occasionally works for Snownavi as a model, and she told me, “I always read your reports with envy. I got to Hakuba yesterday, and I’m enjoying the nice snow! During the time I was taking photos, the wind was blowing so hard as to cause a whiteout, but I was very impressed that Akita-san never lost her smile or composure.

Due to the strong winds, the amount of new snow in each of the ungroomed areas varied, ranging from 20 to 30 cm on the Hiedayama Course 3 (pictured) to 15 to 25 cm on the Kamoshika Course. In either case, the uneven, underlying bases were not hard, so floating was effortless, and I overheard those who skied those areas excitedly commenting as such. One skier who finished a run on the Kamoshika Course said, “Wow, that felt so good! I didn’t hit the bottom at all. I’m going for another run!” and headed straight for the No. 3 Quad.

Most of the visitors who were lined up for the No. 2 Quad first thing this morning got off and immediately lined up for the No. 4 Pair without taking any runs, so I was able to have the moderately soft, powdery groomed Ikenota Slope (pictured) all to myself. It was a similar moderately soft, groomed powder surface on the Ipponmatsu Course, while the Itadaira Course had 3 to 5 cm of fresh snow on top of a moderately firm, groomed powder snow surface.
