The shop on the first floor of the Hotel Green Plaza Hakuba offers a wide selection of souvenirs. Recommended items are the “Kurumi no Mori no Concert” (pictured, white box, JPY1,980) and the apple-scented “Hakuba Kurumi no Concert” (pictured, red box, JPY1,750); both of which won gold awards at the 26th National Confectionary Exposition. Local honey from Otari Village (JPY3,800 for 600g, JPY1,100 for 120g) is another great choice.

Unfortunately, it was pouring rain this morning. I ran into a group of high school students from Aichi Prefecture who came to Cortina with Orion Tour, who told me, “We’ve seen the Snownavi site before! This is our first time at Cortina and our first time to snowboard. We’re about to take a free lesson with the Cortina Snowboard School.”

Since the No. 4 Pair was closed for the entire day due to avalanche danger, only two runs were open: the Ipponmatsu Course and Ikenota Slope (pictured). Both had moderately firm surfaces that my skis ran well across, which is typical of a rainy day. An avalanche occurred this morning on the Hiedayama Course 2, and it will be difficult to re-open it before the end of the season.

One of the high school students from Aichi Prefecture whom I had met earlier caught an edge and took a fall while trying to wave to the camera (pictured). Skiing and snowboarding injuries often occur on gentle slopes where people let their guards down, so please be careful. Visitor turnout was very slow, and even after 10:00 a.m., there were only a few people in sight.
