In stark contrast to yesterday—which was unanimously hailed by the media as having “the strongest winds of the season”—this morning brought calm, spring-like weather perfect for skiing, and all eight lifts started operating on schedule. On the groomed southern route of Usagidaira (pictured), the shallow, soft surface layer of spring corn snow made for smooth, fast runs.

Along the Kurobishi 3 Pair lift (pictured), a mix of large and small moguls has formed, and the thick layer of soft corn snow created classic spring conditions. Two skiers from Hyogo and Osaka (pictured) told me, “We always check your reports! We come to Hakuba every year during Golden Week—and of course, many times during peak season too, haha. It’s quiet out here, and the slopes are smooth and easy to ski!”

The temperature dropped unusually low last night and this morning, and with the fresh snowfall, the white Hakuba peaks (pictured) stood out vividly against the clear blue sky. At the top of the resort, many people could be seen heading out for mountaineering or backcountry skiing and snowboarding.

I had a chat with a woman from the Kansai region (pictured, first from right) who said, “I always use Snownavi! Please take a picture of us! I’m skiing with friends who are living in Nagano. We need to ski as much as we can while the snow is still nice and smooth!” The snow conditions on the groomed area along the Kurobishi Quad were excellent, with a shallow surface layer of soft snow that allowed for good edge grip, making for smooth and easy skiing.
