Shiga REPORT

2025.05.01180 cm / Sunny

Again today, just like yesterday, it was another perfect day for skiing with clear blue skies overhead. I met a group of four from Tokyo (pictured) at the summit of Yokoteyama who told me, “The weather is amazing! We’re heading to the snow park at Shibutoge.” Later, when I saw them again, they added, “The kicker is in great shape!”

During the early morning operation period at Yokoteyama and Shibutoge, the Yokoteyama Second Sky and Shibutoge First Romance lifts started running at 6 a.m., providing access to the Yokoteyama Second Slope, and Shibutoge’s Waver and Gemut courses. A snowboarder from Gunma Prefecture (pictured) shared, “I always buy my advance discount lift tickets through Snownavi. The snow is fast, and feels great!”

Around 10 a.m., a line started to form form the kicker in the Yokote Shibu Springpark. I spoke with a digger named Mamiko who shared, “The park’s operating period has been extended until 5/25 (Sun)! As the snow melts, the number of items may decrease, but we’ll do our best to maintain the park properly until the very end.”

The three courses open for early morning skiing had firm, groomed granular snow bases that began to soften around 7 a.m. and became more slushy by 9 a.m. A skier from Hyogo Prefecture whom I met sometime near 7 a.m. shared, “The snow has just the right amount of firmness.” Additionally, a couple from Osaka chimed in saying, “We’ve been looking forward to coming to Shiga Kogen, and have been working hard to make it happen. It feels great to be out on the slopes in the early morning!”
