With midwinter-like cold temperatures, the snow that fell steadily throughout the day yesterday pushed Tsugaike’s officially reported base depth up sharply from 175 cm to 196 cm. Thanks to strong radiational cooling overnight, temperatures dropped to -10°C both at the top and bottom of the resort this morning. Riding the gondola, the pure white Northern Alps standing out against the deep blue sky were an impressive sight.

The groomed Han-no-ki Slope (pictured) featured superb powdery corduroy that squeaked underfoot with each turn. Edge hold was solid, my skis ran fast, and I enjoyed a smooth, satisfying ride down the roughly 3 km-long downhill. The Shirakaba Slope offered the same excellent conditions and skied just as comfortably at speed.

I ran into the owner of NIKU-masa (pictured) who told me with a laugh, “Conditions are perfect today! By the way, this squid hat actually has a bit of ‘cartilage’ inside so it keeps its shape.” He then skied down the Maruyama Slope, which was groomed with moderately soft, powdery conditions. With the three-day holiday weekend still ahead, visitor numbers were slow to build this morning, and the flat, smooth snow surface stayed in great shape for a long time.

Kane-no-naru-oka (pictured), Oya-no-hara, and Karamatsu were all in the same great shape as Maruyama, with moderately soft, ultra–easy-to-ski groomed powder. Later on in the morning, the Sawa Course at TG PARKS opened (the One Course park is still under construction). Features currently include PVC walls, boxes, various rails, four 3 m kickers, and one 6 m kicker.
