Before resort operations began this morning, I ran into four visitors from Toyama Prefecture and Niigata’s Itoigawa City (pictured) who told me, “We always follow Snownavi! We come to Tsugaike often. The roads were clear of snow as we left home and headed south on National Route 148, and traffic wasn’t too bad this morning, so the drive was smooth.” In terms of weather, this first day of the three-day January holiday weekend was blessed with calm, clear skies.

Soft plumes of snow billowed up with every edge change on the moderately firm, powder-groomed sections of the Tsuga-no-mori Slope. The skiing was outstanding and instantly lifted my mood. The Gotemba Course offered the same excellent powder conditions, making for a smooth, enjoyable run as I weaved through the trees.

The groomed powder snow surface along the Han-no-ki High-Speed Pair (pictured) was moderately firm. From the midsection of Han-no-ki downward, the grooming felt even firmer, as the snow there was likely mixed with machine-made snow, and there were some clumps of snow scattered across the surface. On a perfect morning like this, it felt like the kind of day to lap the Han-no-ki Slope via the gondola, from the mid station.

TG PARKS, located on the Sawa Course, had moderately firm, powdery groomed snow, and opened right on schedule at 9 a.m. The early-section lineup—including two linked 3m kickers, a box, PVC rail, PVC wall, a 6m rail, and a double-down rail—was all in great shape, as were the mid to lower features: a thick round rail, curved rail (pictured), 6m kicker, 5m rail, donkey rail, 5m down rail, 3m kicker, 3m kicker, 3m square rail, box, and mini up rail, all cleanly and carefully shaped.
