This morning, a skier I often run into told me, “I’m glad the rain from yesterday finally stopped. But with how warm it’s been lately, it feels like the season has jumped ahead by a month.” The cloud cover that lingered early in the morning cleared quickly around the 8:00 a.m. opening, giving way to calm, sunny skies. With springlike warmth in the air, a light southeast breeze across Alps Daira actually felt pleasant.

The east-facing Grand Prix Course (pictured) had already softened into loose, granular spring snow from the start. “The surfaces is flat and easy to ski. I’m getting my laps in before it gets too chopped up,” was the comment from a snowboarder I spoke with. On the ungroomed Technical Course, softened undulations and developing moguls covered the entire run.

The north-facing Panorama Course and the upper section of Route 8 held their shape better, with moderately firm granular grooming that allowed for confident edge hold and clean, controlled turns. The Dynamic and Woody Courses also had groomed granular snow, but the surfaces were loosening up. They were still very enjoyable before too many tracks cut through them.

On the Toomi Slope, Powder Snow Course, and Soft Cream Course (pictured), the loose granular surface softened even further within about an hour (though shaded sections remained nicely set). And yes — the short-sleeve skiers have officially appeared. One note: night skiing on 3/4 (Wed.) will be closed to the public due to a private event.
