If you looked at the first photo of this report and thought Tsugaike was sunny, our apologies. The rime ice on the upper slopes during the COWDAY SLOPE 2026 event (pictured) was simply too beautiful not to share. In other news, the Tsugaike Ropeway begins its early-spring operation on 3/7 (Sat.). It’s available to use not only for backcountry and snowshoe users but also for sightseeing rides. (※Operating daily from 3/7 to 3/31, on Fridays through Sundays from 4/3 to 4/26, and daily again from 4/29 to 5/6).

This morning began with rain at the base as a low-pressure system moved along the southern coast. But luckily, when I stepped outside at the gondola summit station, it was snowing. About 5 cm of wet new snow had settled along the Han-no-ki High-Speed Pair, sitting on top of the moderately firm, granular groomers. As I skied down through the midsection of Han-no-ki (pictured) and into the lower section—where the granular groomers had already softened—the amount of new snow gradually tapered off.

The Kane-no-naru-oka Slope (pictured) featured soft, groomed granular snow. This weekend, on 3/7 (Sat.) at 7:30 p.m., the 55th Annual Tsugaike Kogen Snow Festival will take place here, highlighted by a large fireworks display. The free torchlight ski procession is open to the public, with registration available from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the Tsugaike Kogen Tourism Association office and again from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at a special tent on the Kane-no-naru-oka Slope.

I met a man from Omachi City (pictured) who told me, “I always follow Snownavi! I’ve been a Tsugaike season pass holder for about 20 years. On days like this, there are fewer people, the snow softens up, and it’s actually easier to ski.” The Maruyama Slope (pictured) was also groomed with softened granular snow. From around Maruyama downward, where a southerly wind was blowing, rain continued to fall.
