Tsugaike REPORT

It was a brisk, refreshing morning with cool air that felt great on the skin. Before operations began this morning, I ran into a snowboarder from Otari Village (pictured) between the Champion Parking Area (free) and the gondola mid-station. As we talked, she told me, “I always follow Snownavi! Today I’m hiking from the gondola summit station up to Hiyodori-mine to ride some backcountry lines.”

Soon after, two pro riders from KM4K (Kamoshika) and OUTFLOW (pictured, both sides) joined her, and the quiet morning suddenly felt a lot more lively. One of them said, “I always read your reports. We actually rode Hiyodori-mine yesterday too. The snow was great and there weren’t many people, so we’re going back for another lap.” Starting tomorrow, 3/7 (Sat.), the Tsugaike Ropeway begins its early-spring operation, making backcountry skiing, snowboarding, and snowshoeing easier to access (a climbing registration form is required).

The upper to midsection of the Han-no-ki Slope (pictured) was groomed with moderately firm, moist snow. Edges held well, my skis ran fast, and it was easy to link together smooth turns. Earlier in the morning, the Oya-no-hara, Champion, and Shirakaba Slopes were groomed with moist snow, with a bit of granular snow mixed in, that had begun to soften slightly.

The Maruyama Slope (pictured) was also groomed with a mix of moist and granular snow, and had begun to soften on the surface around 8:30 a.m. My skis still ran well, and I could carve exactly the turns I wanted. When I returned to the Champion Slope just after 9:00 a.m., the soft granular surface layer had already thickened noticeably.
