Light wet snow was falling near the gondola summit station around 8:00 a.m., while thick fog blanketed the area. A Happo regular who was first in line for the Alpen Quad (pictured, wearing brown) commented, “There isn’t much new snow, but quite a crowd showed up hoping to find some.” He then addressed the others waiting behind him, adding, “Snownavi is here taking photos—wave!”

Up top, occasional light north winds opened brief windows in the clouds, revealing flashes of blue sky and even a sea of clouds below. Along the ungroomed steep pitch beside the Kurobishi 3 Pair (pictured), 5 to 10cm of heavy new snow sat over soft, irregular rollers that covered the entire face. The snow skied better than it looked, and I found myself wanting to drop in again and again.

Along the Kurobishi Quad (pictured) and on Usagidaira’s South Side Route, thin patches of new snow lay over moderately firm groomed runs made from pressed granular and wet snow. When I rode flat over the fresh snow, my skis slowed slightly, so I focused on keeping the edges engaged through each turn.

I ran into a group of four visitors from Australia and Singapore (pictured) who told me, “Oh—Snownavi! We always read your reports. We’re staying in Hakuba and enjoying JAPOW.” The Panorama Course, which had a groomed granular snow surface with a bit of wet snow mixed in, had softened and felt a little slow under the skis. On the Central Course, irregular moguls combined with a topping of heavy new snow made it easy for skis to get grabbed, so I took it cautiously. From mid-Central down to Shirakaba, brush was already showing across roughly 60% of the slope width.
