Sunlight reached the slopes this morning through thin high clouds. The Riesen Slalom Course (pictured) was groomed with moderately firm granular snow. The surface gradually softened the farther I skied down, and there was a 2 to 3 cm layer of moist man-made snow on the skiers’ left side near the bottom, but the run still held speed well from top to bottom.

Usagidaira’s South Side Route featured moderately firm groomed granular snow, while the run along the Kurobishi Quad (pictured) was moderately firm with a groomed wet snow surface. I spoke with a skier from Mie Prefecture who told me, “Riesen was great first thing, but Kurobishi is the best today.” The snow along the Kurobishi Quad really did stand out, and I found myself wanting to lap that run.

At HAPPO PARKS, which opened at 9:00 a.m., a family from Osaka (pictured) called out to me, “We always read Snownavi! The snow is really easy to ski today.” Even though both areas had groomed granular snow, HAPPO PARKS had a nicely set surface, while Skyline Course—which was already covered in tracks—had a noticeably damp, slightly sticky top layer.

Along the Kurobishi 3 Pair (pictured, background) and beside the Alpen Quad, the medium-to-large moguls had softened by around 9:00 a.m., making them easier to ski. Meanwhile, a developing low-pressure system over the Sea of Japan tonight is forecast to move north and bring a winter pressure pattern back to the area tomorrow. There’s a good chance we’ll see fresh snow again this weekend.
