Colder air returned to the area around 3/7 (Sat.), and with it light snowfall fell on 3/7 (Sat.), 3/8 (Sun.), and 3/10 (Tue.), not only on the upper part of the mountain but also around the base area. This morning brought intense cold, clear skies, and calm winds. Along the Kurobishi Quad (pictured), the groomed surface included a mix of snow from the most recent snowfalls, resulting in moderately firm groomed wet snow that skied smoothly.

The Riesen Slalom Course featured well-set groomed granular snow. In addition, snowmaking machines had operated overnight while temperatures were low, leaving 1 to 5cm of soft man-made snow across the mid to lower sections of Riesen. The feel underfoot changed slightly partway down, but the course held speed well from top to bottom and made for an enjoyable run.

Before the lifts opened, many mountaineers with large packs along with backcountry skiers and snowboarders had already gathered at the Grat Quad. The Riesen Grat Course (pictured) featured groomed granular snow, again with the modest snow from the last few days mixed into the surface, leaving a firm, stable base.

Along the ungroomed steep pitches beside the Kurobishi 3 Pair and the Alpen Quad (pictured), firm, medium-to-large moguls covered the slope. The snow between the bumps acted as a bit of cushioning and made the lines easier to tackle. By the way, on 3/15 (Sun.), “Kids Ski Day” (free lift rides for elementary school students) will feature the Kids Ski Technical Competition on the Nakiyama Public Course.
