Snow started falling late yesterday and continued into the night at both the summit and the base, freshening up the Northern Alps, the slopes, and the surrounding scenery (pictured) with a blanket of white. Thanks to a high pressure system, the morning broke clear and calm. When I stepped off the gondola, the granular surface felt solid, and it immediately lifted my mood.

I spoke with a park digger (pictured) who told me, “We’re opening TG PARKS today. Features include a knoll, a PVC rail, a banked slalom course, a 6 m kicker, and a 5 m kicker. We’re also opening a hike-up park next to Kitchen Tsuga-no-mori.” The hike-up park was set up with a box, a PVC rail, a 6 m down rail, and a double down rail.

Along the Han-no-ki High-Speed Pair, the well-set granular groomers allowed the skis to run fast. Even with the park built on the skier’s right side, the slope remained wide enough to make big, flowing turns comfortably.

I ran into a woman from Kanagawa Prefecture (pictured) who told me, “I worked here at Tsugaike as a seasonal employee through March. I’m enjoying some spring skiing while training for my badge test on 4/12 (Sun.).” From the steep midsection of Han-no-ki (pictured) down to around the unloading area of the Han-no-ki No. 1 Quad, grooming covered roughly one to three snowcat widths. In the ungroomed lower section, the snow ran out near the merge behind the Maruyama Slope, requiring a short walk, followed by another short ski before walking again to the gondola mid-station.
