As many resorts that typically enjoy long seasons, such as Seki Onsen (through 4/12), GALA Yuzawa (through 4/17), and Nekoma (through 4/19) wrap up operations for the season, the deep snowpack at Tsugaike stands. The resort remains a compelling late-season destination, offering three groomed runs, a terrain park, a mogul lane, and access to backcountry terrain. This morning brought calm conditions and thin cloud cover to the area.
[Tsuga-no-mori Slope]

The Tsuga-no-mori Slope was groomed into a moderately firm granular snow surface, while the surface of the run along the Han-no-ki High-Speed Pair (pictured) had softened into looser granular snow. Both were well maintained, and my skis ran smoothly and turns came together cleanly. On the Gotemba Course, where the soft layer was thicker and the surface debris more noticeable, the snow slowed things down a bit, but the quiet tree-lined setting made for an enjoyable run. [Han-no-ki Slope]

…I spoke with a mother from Shizuoka Prefecture (pictured, left) who told me, “We played in the snow park at Nozawa Onsen yesterday, but the snow was slow and we couldn’t ride the way we wanted. TG PARKS this morning is much better—our boards are running great.” By around 9:30 a.m., the soft granular surface layer had deepened further, but conditions continued to support smooth, controlled skiing.

At the hike-up park in front of Kitchen Tsuga-no-mori, I saw middle school students lapping the rails. At the Snow WOW! activity area, in front of the gondola summit station, sled rentals and snowmobile sled rides are currently available. The day after tomorrow, 4/19 (Sun.), marks the final Kids Ski Day of the season, when elementary school students can receive a free one-day lift ticket.
